Dilution Is Not the Solution
WRITTEN BY: Christopher R. Ashley, PHD
We regularly receive questions about diluting hypochlorous acid products, especially in light of online “hacks” suggesting that one product can be turned into another. We hear you and want to be very clear.
Our products are not interchangeable.
Each Briotech formula is intentionally designed, rigorously tested, and clearly labeled for its specific use. A surface sanitizer is not a facial mist. A cosmetic product is not a cleaning product. Diluting or repurposing a formula undermines both safety and efficacy.
Why hypochlorous acid requires precision
Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a highly effective but inherently sensitive molecule. Its stability and performance depend on tightly controlled conditions, including concentration, pH, and water quality. This is why our formulations are developed and manufactured under strict professional standards using high-purity ingredients and validated processes.
When HOCl is altered outside of those conditions, it can lose efficacy or degrade more quickly. In some cases, it may no longer perform as intended.
Water quality matters more than most people realize
A common misconception is that dilution is harmless as long as “clean” water is used. This is not accurate.
Tap water, while safe for drinking, often contains trace metals, organic matter, and minerals. These components can react with HOCl, reducing antimicrobial activity and potentially forming unintended byproducts.
Even purified waters are not interchangeable. Distilled water, deionized water, reverse osmosis water, and ultrapure water all differ in composition and pH. Changing the water source alters the formula's chemistry.
Our products are formulated within extremely narrow pH ranges to ensure that the active species remains hypochlorous acid, not hypochlorite. Adding water to the formula can shift the balance, making the product less stable and less effective.
Why you should never “hack” a Briotech product
We have seen content suggesting that Briotech cleaning or sanitizing products can be diluted and used as facial sprays. For efficacy and product integrity, we do not recommend this.
Products formulated for household or surface use are not tested, approved, or intended for cosmetic application. Our Face & Body formulas are specifically developed, tested, and curated for use on skin.
Use case matters—because formulation intent matters.
The one exception, and why it still matters
There is a single, limited exception worth clarifying.
Our Extra Strength Hypochlorous Acid may be diluted only with distilled water, and solely for personal preference regarding scent intensity. This is not a recommendation to repurpose the product, nor does it apply to any other Briotech formula.
Distilled water is required because it lacks the minerals and contaminants that can destabilize HOCl. Even then, dilution changes the chemistry and shortens the shelf life, which is why it is generally not advised.
No other water type should be used. No other products should be diluted.
The bottom line
Briotech products are developed with intention, precision, and purpose. They are not DIY bases or multipurpose concentrates. Dilution, substitution, or repurposing compromises product integrity and effectiveness.
Please use each product exactly as labeled and intended. When it comes to hypochlorous acid, dilution is not the solution.
